BeautyAsia 2015: Highlights and Hauls: Skincare, Brushes, and Nail Polish

Friday, February 6, 2015

BeautyAsia came to town a couple of weeks back, and it's one of the largest scale beauty trade shows in Singapore, so I couldn't miss it! I also took photos of some of the highlights that I'd like to share with you guys! There were tons and tons of things to see (over 100 booths!), so I thought I'd just give you guys a quick view of some of the highlights, and what I bought!

BeautyAsia 2015: One of the ever-popular nail polish displays

As you might guess, this year's BeautyAsia had a pretty big crowd, as always. And, just like last year's BeautyAsia 2014 and BeautyAsia 2013, some of the perennial favourites were there - Hakuhodo was there with their gorgeously soft (if expensive!) brushes, and the nail polish distributors were there too. So, without further ado, let's take a dive into what I saw there!

Buy Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate And Help Action For AIDS Singapore!

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

This January, Kiehl's Singapore is partnering with Action for AIDS (AfA), a non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to AIDS prevention, advocacy and support. Don't you just love it when companies do their bit for charity, too? And the good news is, there are not one but two ways you can support Kiehl's efforts!

For each bottle of Midnight Recovery Concentrate you buy, $5 will be donated to AfA.

The first way is to buy a bottle of Midnight Recovery Concentrate. From now to end of January, for every bottle of Special Edition Midnight Recovery Concentrate sold, SGD$5.00 will be donated to AfA. As a token of appreciation, each customer will receive a limited edition key charm. The funds collected will go towards helping AfA's Pregnant Mothers' Fund where work is done to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV and assist diagnosed HIV-positive children to seek immediate medical treatment. The Midnight Recovery Concentrate is pretty darn awesome, and I've blogged about the Midnight Recovery Concentrate before, so you can check my review out if you so wish!

Also, you can upload photos of smiling kids to Instagram with the hashtag #SmileKiehlsSG to donate $0.50 per upload!

The second way is to join in Kiehl's Instagram contest! In this campaign, Kiehl's would like to collect photos of "smiles from children". For every photo submission to Instagram with the hashtag #SmileKiehlsSG from today till 31st January 2014, SGD$0.50 will be donated to the AfA. You might also stand a chance to win a bottle of Midnight Recovery Concentrate, with the limited edition key charm!

So those are your two ways to do your bit for charity, either by stocking up on your favourite Midnight Recovery Concentrate, or by simply Instagramming!

Collection Cosmetics Swatches and Review: Collection Arrives in Singapore!

Collection Cosmetics, a UK-based drugstore brand (you'll find them most commonly in Superdrug) has now come to Singapore! I recall this brand quite fondly from my days as a student in the UK, back when the brand was still called Collection 2000, and I guess life has a way of coming full circle, because now the brand is coming to Singapore!

Collection Cosmetics Stand
Collection Cosmetics is now coming to Singapore!

Collection Cosmetics is one of the top 3 UK drugstore brands with their young, fashionable image, and they have steadily been expanding into Asia (you will also find the brand in Hong Kong and Philippines). The line is cheap, with prices running from S$9.90 and up - this isn't as cheap as in the UK, but is still drugstore pricing. As always, I've done some swatches of some of my personal favourites from the line, and if you want to check out the brand, these would be, in my humble opinion, the items to start off with!

Kiehl's Try Before You Buy - Get 5 Free Samples!

Just a quick post to let you guys know that you can get 5 personalized skincare samples when you visit any Kiehl's stand for their "Try Before You Buy" drive! I like it when I can get samples before I buy (without the hard-selling pressure) - it's really a testament to the customer service and the company's confidence in its own products.

Yes, you can get 5 free samples!

You can visit this link to register for your skincare consultation and 5 samples suited to your skintype! (I guess I'm not a bigtime blogger so under "Other Blogger" you can put me down if you are so inclined to do so - thanks in advance if you do!)

Do Your Bit For Autism When You Buy Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque

Monday, August 5, 2013

I love it when companies engage in charitable activities. Sure, it's easy to take a cynical view of such endeavors too, but as far as I'm concerned, any and every bit helps. So I'm pretty stoked that Kiehl's has teamed up with Elle Magazine to do some good ol' fundraising for the Autism Association (Singapore).

Autism affects 1 in 100 children globally, and with such high statistics, it's quite possible that you, too, may know someone with autism. This year, when you buy a Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque, 100% of the nett proceeds will be donated to raise awareness for the Autism Association (Singapore)!

Vanity Trove is now Customizable: Choose Your Beauty Box Samples!

Saturday, July 6, 2013

I know that some of you must be tired of beauty boxes by now. For me, the concept just started getting a bit old - from one box service to the next, there wasn't much differentiation. Sure each box promises to send you a bunch of beauty samples every month, but over time I was starting to feel that honestly, there wasn't much value-add to the boxes - sometimes the samples weren't quite what I wanted, and sometimes the mix of samples seemed random.

Fortunately, Vanity Trove, one of the local beauty boxes, has launched a new website and new features. Most importantly, you now have the ability to customize your own Trove. This means that yes, you get to pick your own samples! I actually just picked my samples for next month's Trove, and there are some pretty cool things in there! Some really awesome full-sized products (including products from Isabella Smith, Phyto and Blumarine), and some generous sample sizes (e.g. 75ml kind of size, not just sachets). You will then get your box in 7 working days (so whenever you pick your samples, you will get your box in a week, rather than waiting for a month for standardized samples).

The range of samples that you get to pick from is partly determined by your beauty profile, which uses information like skin type and colour to provide a range of samples from which you can pick to populate your Vanity Trove for the month. My understanding is that the samples are picked on a first-come-first-served basis, so if you're keen, you should quickly login and pick your samples now, and fill out your beauty profile to avoid disappointment!

There is also a product reviews section that looks interesting, and you can review and track products you and others like, to help give the site a better idea of what kind of samples you'll be interested in, too.

Anyway, this was just some quick news that I'm excited about and want to share! I do think this is the first I've ever heard of a beauty box subscription allowing you to pick your own samples, and I'm keen to see how this works out! It does seem to be a great deal for subscribers (for $25 a month, you get 6 samples of your choice, and you to pick more samples if you subscribe for 3 months, or longer). So if you're looking for a more substantial beauty box offering, do check the Vanity Trove website out (PS - I'm also on Vanity Trove as musicalhouses, too).

(I am not affiliated with the company in anyway. However, this news was shared with me by the company.)

Kiehl's Cuts Prices on 21 Customer Favourites - Yay!

Monday, April 15, 2013

I'm a little slow with the news, but yes, in case you haven't heard (or in case you've heard but haven't acted on the news), Kiehl's has lowered the prices on not one, two, or three, but TWENTY-ONE of their products. Many of them are customer favourites, too, such as the Midnight Recovery Concentrate (down from $90 to $80), Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF50 PA+++ ($68 to $52) and Calendula Herbal Extract Toner ($78 to $58).

(Source)

All in all, the price drop gives you a discount of up to 30%, and this discount is permanent! I'm glad that at least there is ONE brand that isn't charging exorbitant amounts for useless products. Kiehl's products are known for their ability to actually work, so with the price cut, now is a good time to try out something new, or just to refuel on your favourites. For a full list of the 21 products that have undergone a price cut, do check out the Kiehl's SG website.

Crazy Beauty Trends: Give Yourself Eyebags!

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Tired of fighting your eyebags? Struggling to get enough sleep every night? Tired of spending money on useless eyecreams? Now here's your solution! Leave your eyebags be! Because apparently one of the beauty trends going around is to give yourself eyebags!

Apparently the inspiration for this trend is that Korean actresses have eyebags, and some people actually think that these acresses look better WITH their eyebags, than without. (You can view a rather bizarre post on this trend here.) Thus, Korean-actress-fandom reasoning says, if their stars look better with eyebags, so will the average girl! In the blogpost I mentioned above, there are some photos of celebs with/without eyebags and the comparisons are made between them.

(Source)

I don't know about you, but I've never been a fan of the "it-looks-good-on-a-celebrity-thus-it-would-look-good-on-me" line of logic. I mean, how many of us can pull off the runway fashions like the models? And in anycase, while I do agree that if you are an actress, sometimes eyebags give the character you're playing a certain realism, e.g. if you're playing a harried working mother-of-three, then I guess a flawless looking character won't look realistic. Still, I do think that by and large, most people look much better without eyebags than with. And I don't think I've ever seen a photo of a star with/without eyebags and thought "Man she looks much better with eyebags!" I think the whole trend arose because some girls felt that their eyes were too small, and that having those eyebags draws attention to them.

But in anycase, if for some reason you don't have eyebags but want them, here now is your problem solved! You can use double eyelid tape (yes, tape to stick on your eyes to fake that crease is quite commonplace in Korea already) to give yourself eyebags! Talk about double duty!

Source: Sasa FB Page

Blech. Seriously? This is the dumbest trend ever. First, I maintain that I don't think anyone looks better with eyebags than without, and secondly, keep doing this on a regular basis, and 5 years from now, your 30-year-old eyes will have 40-year-old wrinkles, thanks to all the pulling and tugging at the delicate skin around the eye area. Yucks.

In anycase, I am now at least on board with ONE trend. I've never been the trendy kind, but now I am, LOL! Yes, this is because yours truly has HUGE eyebags (blame the work schedules, and the little sleep). Look at the most recent photo of me on FB, taken at an event. Those eyebags, baby, are 100% real. No tape! (So are the pimples, I'm afraid - I do have problematic skin.)

Maybe I'm not a Korean actress, but you know, I kinda prefer myself WITHOUT those darn eyebags. But, hey, I'm totally fashionable now!

Of course, while this may seem a little strange, every country and every culture has their own crazy beauty trends - it's not just us in Asia! I just write about the Asian ones more because, well, I'm Asian, and I'm living in Asia, so this is what I come into contact with. But for what it's worth, the West sure has crazy beauty trends, and crazy people too - every now and then I come across news coverage on tanning addicts, and I always get a little freaked out. Now, can someone make pimples in fashion, so that my acne can be on-trend too? LOL.

Pulling For A Cause: Do Your Brows, And Your Bit For Charity!

Thursday, October 4, 2012

Remember my BCA Manicure? Well it's October (aka Breast Cancer Awareness Month), so along with the nail art, here's how you can do your bit for charity, and look good at the same time, with Pulling For A Cause!

Date: Saturday 6 October 2012
Time: 10am - 6pm
Venue: *SCAPE PLAYSPACE
(SCAPE, 2 Orchard Link, Singapore 237978)

So what exactly is this? At Pulling For A Cause, get your eyebrows all day in exchange for a donation to the Singapore Cancer Society. Threading your eyebrows takes 10 minutes. So does a breast self-examination.

Every year, in Singapore, 1400 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 300 die. So despite the girly-frilly pink often associated with BCA promotions, the disease itself is no joke.

I personally love the idea - I totally need to get my brows done anyway, and it's good to know that I can donate to charity at the same time! Talk about win-win!

Visit the Pulling For A Cause website at http://pullingforacause.sg.

Autumn/Winter 2012/2013 Nail Trends: Not Impressed! Yawn.

Saturday, September 8, 2012

You know that although I don't really follow trends all that much, I do like to see what happens on the catwalk - I like taking a look at which trends are showcased, and the different designers' takes on the trends. I'm not talking about the clothes of course, or even the makeup (although I watch that with interest too), I'm talking about nails!

This year, the Fall/Winter 2012-2013 nail trends are just so yawn-inducing, I found myself thinking "Dammit, that's boring" and "Sheesh, I've seen that a gazillion times done by other bloggers". Let me give you three reasons why:

1. The "Oops, I Ruined My Mani Look" is in Again

Sigh. I just hope this doesn't spark a rush of copycat blogposts. The last time some celebrity wore the "I ruined my mani" look in a magazine, it was all over my Google Reader. I'm a bit of a traditionalist in that I like my nails to look like painted nails, not ruined manicures passing off as artistic statements. To me, it's one of those "works for the runway, not for me" type things. Nice silver colour, though, very sleek. Does it even look a little holographic?

(Source: Vogue)

2. Shatter and Crackle Nail Polish (Or Stuff That Looks Like It)

Come on guys, you're supposed to be like the pinnacle of the fashion world, right? Shatters and crackles are so, like, two years ago. This is defiitely a yawn for me. I'm not sure exactly what was used to make that thing below, but man, it sure looks like plain ol' black crackle polish. (I just learned it's called croc nails from a reader who commented below. Thanks Joanna! The nails though - sheesh. Almost the same thing, just a different name.) Boring. Next!

(Source: Vogue)

3. Boring Colours and Combinations

For fall, the look seems to be - you guessed it, deep dark vampy shades, and nudes, and some new neutrals (like grey). Yawn. I mean, for sure these are classic shades, but man, I was hoping that with the Pantone colour palette for Fall including some kick-ass shades (Olympian Blue, Bright Chartreuse), the nails would be something a little more bright, colour-wise.

Even the nail art was boring. There was minx (which is cool, but not if you're a polish lover like me), and then there was stuff like this: Nude and black (or in this case, dark brown) french tips for nail art. That's a french manicure with a dark tip. I've seen this done before on so many blogs. It's a nice look, but not groundbreaking or anything.

(Source: Vogue)

And then there's this. I can't figure out what it is. It looks like a deep vampy base (or possibly even black, hard to tell in that lighting), with random strips of grey painted on it. Still, it looks sort of cool, I guess:

(Source: Vogue)

Okay, not all of it was bad. There were pops of colour here and there, primarily blue (must be Olympian Blue). Some fashion houses got lazy and just painted the nails straight-up blue. Some, this, got a little more interesting, and even did all-out nail art. This was the highlight for me, I guess.

(Source: Vogue)

(Source: Vogue)

So, this is why I'm totally not impressed with the nail trends as seen on the runway for Fall/Winter 2012. Despite all the hoo-ha that surrounds Fashion Week, I really only have one response:

(For the record though, I absolutely love MaKayla Maroney. Falling on your butt and STILL getting an Olympic silver medal? That's still quite the acheivement in my book!)

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Rose and Lavender Special Edition: ComingSoon!

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

If you liked Liz Earle's flagship product, the Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, then you'll like this news - the award-winning formula is being updated to include rose and lavender essential oils.

Starting 6 September, we will see the launch of the Cleanse & Polish Rose and Lavender Special Edition, which I'm sure will smell absolutely heavenly. The calming and relaxing lavender oil combined with the soothing properties of rose make this product ideal for night-time use. The Special Edition Cleanse & Polish retails for £19.25 for 150ml, and wow, the bottle is beautiful.

Also, Liz Earle will donate £2.00 from every product purchased to The Prince’s Trust, helping young people into jobs and training. So you can indulge yourself and do good both at once! It's a little more expensive than the current Liz Earle 100ml (£12.75) and 200ml (£24) sizes for the normal edition, but hey, you're doing a good deed! (If you remove the £2 donation from the cost of the Special Editon Cleanse & Polish, you actually get a better deal per ml than the normal editions.)

There's actually a further backstory to this, centering around Liz Earle's involvement in The Tomorrow Campaign (basically the new Special Edition Cleanse & Polish is a result of the company's work with the campaign which will be sold to raise funds for the Trust), but for beauty fanatics, all you need to know is that the favourite Cleanse & Polish is going to have a gorgeous smell, and that if you buy it, you'll be contributing to charity!

If you live in Singapore, you're in luck! Luxola is not only having a sale right now, they're also having a promotion where if you spend $50 and above in a single purchase, you get a FREE bottle of Lippmann Happy Birthday! That's like double whammy, and a really good deal, since a bottle of Happy Birthday would normally cost you $35. So you effectively spend $50, and get a gift worth $35! Also, I've featured Lippmann Happy Birthday before in a recent NOTD, and I can testify that it is total awesomeness, especially if glitter is your thing.

So anyway, this promo doesn't last forever. It ends 24 June or while stocks last. And Luxola has free next day shipping, so all the better. I don't always post sale news up here, but this is too good to pass up. I'm totally getting a couple more Lippmanns from their sale as I type this...

Vanity Trove: Two Boxes = Double the Fun for March!

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Vanity Trove, the Singapore-based beauty box subscription service, has not one but TWO boxes for Spring! One box features skincare, while the other features beauty products in line with this season's Spring trends.

With two boxes, each targeted to a specific need - beauty or skincare - you can pick which box you'd like! Or if you can't decide, or just want to get both boxes, then Vanity Trove will reward you with 10 Trove credits! Usually Vanity Trove's referral system is such that each referral to a new suscriber gets 5 credits, and 25 credits gets you a free box, so the 10 credits you would get just by buying the boxes is pretty decent...it's like 40% of the way to a free box! Even if you only use one box, the other one is easily gift-able, since the boxes are large, pretty, and very presentable as gifts.

Lastly, for those getting both boxes, Vanity Trove will be giving some lucky suscribers tickets to catch "The Vow" (check out the movie trailer), starting Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams in a campaign for Independent Women's Day. Hence the "Get Lucky" tagline for March - not only do you get free credits, you could win movie tickets!

Anyway, since this is a great deal, I thought I'd share it with all of you. if you want to find out more about Vanity Trove's double surprise for March, head to their website now!

Emma Watson's Partially Painted Nails: Yay or Nay?

Monday, November 28, 2011

So I've been seeing a number of tutorials for a partially painted or deconstructed nail look, and I was pretty puzzled. Since when did we start putting out tutorials on how to make your manicure look totally ruined? Turns out, a celebrity wore it in a magazine! Emma Watson, in November's Elle magazine, had her nails painted to look half-done. This is the look in question:

Some bloggers have called it a 'reverse french manicure', but to me, it just kinda looks like a very badly executed Ruffian manicure. And from the Elle website, seems like a lot of work went into getting it to look like that. The nail artist first painted the areas near the cuticles, and then used an airbrushing tool to get the colour gradation, but left the middle part unpainted.

Since the photo above wasn't too adequate in showing the nail look, I tried getting screencaps of the behind-the-scenes video. Here's what I got. I couldn't get a bigger version...it just ended up looking blurry.

I'm scratching my head as to why an airbrushing tool, of all things, was needed to make your nails look like a 5 year old painted them halfway. Hey guys, I'm airbrushing my nails to make them look all messed up! LOL.

Anyway, based on the tutorials I've seen, the look can be recreated using variety of other, much simpler, methods (smudging the polish while wet, painting the whole nail and then removing the center, and basically other methods of destroying your mani, preferably while it's still wet).

Anyway, I can't say I'm a fan of the nail look, although I love Emma Watson (aww, come on, who doesn't?). To me, it doesn't look deconstructed or trendy, it just looks like a manicure worn for waaay too long. And for some reason, it looks really dirty, as though dirt collected in the cuticle area. Well, on the bright side, if I walk into work with chipped and disgusting nail polish and my boss complains about it, I'll just tell him that this is how we all wear our nail polish nowadays!

What do you think of this look? High fashion, or just sloppy? Let me know!
