Kesha-Inspired Silver Lips: My First Kiss Went a Little Like This!

Monday, December 12, 2011

The other day, something crazy struck me. I was wasting time on Youtube, watching 3OH!3's "My First Kiss" video, featuring Kesha. While I was mentally chanting, "My first kiss went a little like this! And twist!" I couldn't help but notice Kesha's gold lips in the video.

All of a sudden, a thought came to me - what if I did something like that, just for fun? And what if it was silver, instead of gold? I didn't have any silver lipstick, so I looked or something else that I could use. I remembered seeing other bloggers use things like eyeliners and eye pencils for such a look, so I thought, why not use some crem eyeshadows? And that's when it struck me - the Sleek Molten Metal in Steel and Ash would do just nicely!

I've blogged about the Sleek Steel and Ash Molten Metal before, but back then I was using them as cream eyeshadows, not lip colour. So here you go! The result of my crazy boredom. Pardon the messy application, I hope you get the idea!

For hygiene purposes, I didn't use these on my lips straight out of the packaging, as I didn't want to contaminate my cream eyeshadows. Instead, I scooped a bit out onto the back of my hand, and worked with a brush from there. Obviously my skills need brushing up. The Molten Metal actually felt alright on my lips - not too drying or oily feeling (I accidentally got some on my tongue, and it didn't taste too good, LOL).

Obviously, I didn't dare to wear this look out, and I didn't have it on long either because it started smudging after awhile. Since the Molten Metals were made as eyeshadows, I'm not sure how lip safe these are, but they're sure fun to play around with. Would you wear crazy colours on your lips? Or is that just too out there?

Emma Watson's Partially Painted Nails: Yay or Nay?

So I've been seeing a number of tutorials for a partially painted or deconstructed nail look, and I was pretty puzzled. Since when did we start putting out tutorials on how to make your manicure look totally ruined? Turns out, a celebrity wore it in a magazine! Emma Watson, in November's Elle magazine, had her nails painted to look half-done. This is the look in question:

Some bloggers have called it a 'reverse french manicure', but to me, it just kinda looks like a very badly executed Ruffian manicure. And from the Elle website, seems like a lot of work went into getting it to look like that. The nail artist first painted the areas near the cuticles, and then used an airbrushing tool to get the colour gradation, but left the middle part unpainted.

Since the photo above wasn't too adequate in showing the nail look, I tried getting screencaps of the behind-the-scenes video. Here's what I got. I couldn't get a bigger version...it just ended up looking blurry.

I'm scratching my head as to why an airbrushing tool, of all things, was needed to make your nails look like a 5 year old painted them halfway. Hey guys, I'm airbrushing my nails to make them look all messed up! LOL.

Anyway, based on the tutorials I've seen, the look can be recreated using variety of other, much simpler, methods (smudging the polish while wet, painting the whole nail and then removing the center, and basically other methods of destroying your mani, preferably while it's still wet).

Anyway, I can't say I'm a fan of the nail look, although I love Emma Watson (aww, come on, who doesn't?). To me, it doesn't look deconstructed or trendy, it just looks like a manicure worn for waaay too long. And for some reason, it looks really dirty, as though dirt collected in the cuticle area. Well, on the bright side, if I walk into work with chipped and disgusting nail polish and my boss complains about it, I'll just tell him that this is how we all wear our nail polish nowadays!

What do you think of this look? High fashion, or just sloppy? Let me know!

Rihanna Who's That Chick Eye Look Dupe!

I was watching Rihanna's latest music video, Who's That Chick on Youtube lately (oh yes, I do watch pop music on Youtube!). And while I was singing along, "Who's that chick, who's that chick", I was also ogling her eye look in the video:

There I was, marveling at the stunning eye look, when a thought struck me: Hey, I have all those colours in my stash! So why shouldn't I try out that look?

Of course, I couldn't possibly wing my liner all the way out like that and wear it out, and my very different eye shape necessitated different eyeshadow placement, but I did try to stick to the colours and adapt them to my tiny, puny, contour-less Asian eyes. And this is what I arrived at:

Rihanna Whos that Chick Eye Look

Okay, fine. So my eyes don't look anything like Rihanna's. What can I say, I'm not gorgeous! For this look, I used the cheap but still awesome BeautyUK palette I got awhile back. Yes, it so happens that the main colours used in Rihanna's eye look were all found in this palette - how lucky is that? The photo below shows which of the colours I used:

BeautyUK Eyeshadow Palette Day and Night 5

For the lid area, I used the yellow shade. On the crease/contour area, I used the light brown to blend in. And the shimmery white shade was used as the browbone highlight. And I finished off with mascara (this time, I'm also using the BeautyUK mascara, which I really need to get around to reviewing soon), and eyeliner. I used MAC Ostentatious Fluidline, which has sadly been discontinued. *Kicks a rock and mutters* Darn MAC, making stuff I like limited edition...

Anyway, here's a shot of my closed eye, so you can see the colour placement and blending. Looking at these shots, I really envy Rihanna's gorgeous peepers!

The thing I really liked about this eye look is that while it's certainly the kind of look that adds a pop to any outfit, it's not terribly difficult to do, and can be done with just three simple colours - yellow, brown, and a white highlight. I love using browns in makeup looks. You can't muddy up a brown look with overblending, because it's already brown!

Obviously, I can't sing, dance, or pull off outrageous brightly coloured outfits like Rihanna. And my eye look doesn't even end up making me look any closer to her! (Darn.) But by adapting her Who's That Chick eye look to my eyes, I guess I can now channel my inner (if a bit non-existent) pop star!
