You might be wondering, why did I say it was still an appropriate fragrance choice for our perpetually hot weather? Isn't the original Elizabeth Arden Untold, which I reviewed previously, as a modern, white-floral perfume with an amber base. The bottles for Untold Eau Legere and Untold may be almost exactly the same, with the only difference being the perfume name engraved along the side of the bottle, but the scents inside are coloured differently. And just like the scent colour, Untold Eau Legere, as the name suggests, has some similarities, being a flanker, but is different enough such that the two are distinct.
Elizabeth Arden Untold Eau Legere, left, and the original Untold, right.
Firstly, Untold Eau Legere is an EdT, while Untold is an EdP, so it's lighter than the original Untold. Also, Untold Eau Legere has a citrus note to it that isn't present in the original. The notes in the Eau Legere version that are new to this flanker are sparkling green apple, grapefruit and purple freesia, while the other notes include blackcurrant, pink pepper, gardenia, jasmine, peony, sandalwood, amber, patchouli and musk.
Untold Eau Legere starts off with a citrus note that evaporates fairly quickly, and then the middle fruity-floral notes start to take prominence. The middle notes, which perhaps are the most similar to the original Untold, being primarily florals as well, last for quite awhile, and after some time, the patchouli base emerges. The base note is also a change from the original Untold, which had an amber base. Patchouli can sound pretty scary to some people, but rest assured this is a very well-behaved, office-friendly tamed-down patchouli that is quite mild. While some people may be scared off by any mention of "patchouli" in a fragrance, this incarnation of patchouli is one that's actually not too strong for people around you. It's definitely wearable to the office or other spaces where loud scents may not be appreciated. On me, I get a final mix of floral and patchouli, which I do like, as it's wearable, feminine, and yet still has some hint of complexity. I was also pleased to note that the scent did not "turn" rancid on me like some perfumes do.
Elizabeth Arden Untold Eau Legere EdT: The name of the scent is engraved into the side of the bottle
So, how would I sum this up? I'd say that in general, fruity-florals tend to be a mixed bag for me - too much sweet-smelling fruit and it risks ending up smelling too cloying and juvenile. Fortunately, Elizabeth Arden's Untold Eau Legere is a pretty good mix of both, and the fruity notes are primarily citrus, so they don't smell too sweet or harsh. As far as audience for the perfume goes, this is a crowd-pleaser, so while I can definitely see the average woman liking this scent, the very niche perfume fanatics may turn up their noses (literally and figuratively, I suppose) at this scent for being too mainstream. But, for someone like me, who has to live in a hot climate with a scent and wear it to my work in an office and in crowded spaces like public transport, I'm just looking for a clean, light, wearable, feminine but not excessively girly scent - something that is pleasant, not too sweet, and doesn't draw excessive attention to itself. And Untold Eau Legere happens to fit the bill pretty well.

The Bottom Line: As far as mainstream scents go, Elizaabeth Arden's Untold Eau Legere is a crowd-pleasing mix of citrus, florals and patchouli, that is clean and feminine, without being excessively girly or cloying. |
