Nose Clips: The Crazier Side of Asian Beauty

Growing up as an Asian girl in Asia, I couldn't help but notice that the girls around me were concerned with looking beautiful. Now the desire to look good is, of course, universal to all women (and men, I'm sure), but in the Asian context, it seemed to me to focus on two specific areas: the eyes, and the nose. I always found this a little bit funny, because it seemed to just be an Asian thing, perhaps. Girls around me were always trying to make their eyes look, bigger, rounder, and have a more prominent crease - basically, they were trying to make their eyes look more Caucasian. And then there was the nose. Basically, if you have a nose with no bridge, and a nose tip that isn't well defined - in Asian-speak, a nose that isn't Caucasian-looking - then your nose isn't as pretty.

Now of course, not all Asian girls want to look Caucasian, and not all Asian girls are obsessed with beauty, but it just happens to be a trend I've noticed over time. I always like to tell my American friends, just like how American girls are obsessed with boob size (and again that is another generalization), Asian girls are obsessed with the shape of their eyes and noses. I guess it's just human nature - there's always something about yourself you're not quite happy with, and it doesn't matter whether you're Asian, Caucasian, or Alien. LOL.

So it puzzled me when I discovered this little invention. I know most of my Asian readers will know what this is, but I bet my Caucasian friends are going to be a little confused as to what this contraption is:

It's a nose clip. Yup, you heard me right, a nose clip. It's been around in Asia for awhile, and seems to have a steady stream of buyers, despite looking a little like a torture device. But what is it used for?

(Picture from: http://texyt.com/plastic+clip+diy+nose+job+cheap+00078)

Yes, you are indeed supposed to clip your nose, as in the illustration on the package. Basically, if you are one of those girls with - heaven forbid - a non-Caucasian-looking nose, you can now clip it into shape with this handy little gadget.

Don't believe me? Check out the product description, complete with Engrish explanations exhorting you to "be a Cleopatra nose" (what!):

(Picture from: http://texyt.com/plastic+clip+diy+nose+job+cheap+00078)

Personally, I'm not a fan of these devices. I mean, I can understand girls who are unhappy about their nose - in fact, if you take a trip through any of my FOTDs, you'll see that I have the most bridge-less, flattest, un-Caucasian-like nose you can ever find. So I fully emphatise. But to go to the extent of clipping your nose like that? Personally, I'd rather whip out the contouring powder. More painless, and still effective, and it wouldn't make me feel like I was selling out by trying to reshape a part of my body in a rather painful way. (For the record, I don't actually have any contouring powder. I'm too lazy.)

That said, these little nose clips were all the rage for a period of time. Everyone and their mothers had one. Heck, even my roomate had one - and back then, we were studying in Chicago, and she had hers flown in all the way from Singapore just so she could use it! I never had one, but I thought it was crazy. I mean, I borrowed my friend's nose clips and tried it out once, and I couldn't keep that clip on for more than 5 seconds. It was PAINFUL, because those nose clips were made of hard plastic, and they were basically no more than glorified clothes pegs. Try putting a peg to your nose and telling me it isn't painful! In fact, I distinctly remember my roomate clipping her nose so much that the flesh on her nose became red and tender. Not very sexy, but at least it made her happy.

But nose clips aside, what really bugs me is also the advertising of these nose clips. Take a look at this photo on the packaging, advertising the nose clip:

(Picture from: http://texyt.com/plastic+clip+diy+nose+job+cheap+00078)

Asian girl looking longingly at Caucasian girl, check. Caucasian girl is on a TV screen while Asian girl is sitting at home, check. Asian girl is having this "I-wish-I-was-like-you" look while gazing wistfully at Caucasian girl, check. I don't know about you, but something about that image just unsettles me. It's almost as though that image is saying "Hey Asian girl, we both know you would rather be Caucasian, because Caucasian girls are all prettier. So why not use our nose clip, and you can be just like her?" I've always been a bit annoyed by ads that play into this whole "buy our product and you'll look more Caucasian" mindset, becaue it seems a little bit sterotypical. And I'm not too keen on companies attempting to cash in on sterotypes to make a quick buck.

Anyway, just in case anyone has questions about the efficacy of these products - well, I suppose if you did have the patience to clip your nose til it almost resembles Michael Jackson's, these products might just end up working - but only a tiny little bit, and only for a very short while. This is because these products just mold your nose by applying constant pressure to it. Over time, the pressure deforms the nose, and it attains a slightly different shape. However, this effect is only slight, because the underlying shape and structure of the nose remains unchanged. Furthermore, because this change is brought about only through sheer pressure, the result is that the change is not permanent. So the pressure has to be constantly applied in order to maintain the effect. It's kind of like Botox - it may help things for awhile, but it's not a permanent fix, and it doesn't do any real change. I also wouldn't be surprised if in the long run, it actually damages your skin and tissue underneath - I mean, all that pressure and squeexing can't be good.

So obviously, you can tell I'm not really a fan of such gadgetry. But I know lots of girls are. And I know this because the inventors of the nose clip have come out with yet another grotesque-looking nose-shaping device to make more money:

(Picture from http://inventorspot.com/articles/nose_jobs_without_surgery_devices_fix_your_flaws_39881)

Yup, I guess that must be for those who are REALLY unhappy with their noses, because it clips not just the nose, but the entire friggin nose bridge. Can you just say OUCH?

Anyway, like I've said before, I don't judge anyone. I don't judge people who wear only neutral makeup, I don't judge people who paint blue eyeshadow pigment all over their faces, and in the same vein, I don't judge people who wear nose clips. It's really that person's choice, after all, and what other people do to their noses is not in my purview.

But as I've said before - there is always something about yourself you're not going to like. If you're Asian, it could be your nose or eyes. If you're Caucasian, it could be your boobs. If you're Indian, it could be that you wish to be fairer. If you're African-American, it could be your hair. And the list goes on. What I'm saying is that no matter what ethnicity we are, no matter whether we think nose clips are OK or not, noone can ever be 100% happy with themselves, because nobody is perfect. So, past a certain point, we just have to accept ourselves for who we are. And I know that this going to sound odd on a beauty blog, but there is only so much makeup and skincare can do. At the end of the day, no matter who we are, or what our race is, beauty products and beauty companies can't love us, and they can't make us love ourselves more, although they can make us look more pretty. At the end of the day, we just have to love ourselves.

  3. My little sister in law, who is 100% caucasian, used to clip her nose as a little girl with a clothes pin because the movie Little Women. I think anyone is vulnerable to this kind of marketing if they are truly unhappy with their looks. I still to this day consider reshaping my nose surgically...

  4. woah! I live in Dubai and growing up in the middle east, it's always been crazy. I'm half Asian and half black so you can imagine what it was like for me growing up. Everywhere I looked it was Fair & Lovely. I remember going into beauty shops and being asked if I wanted 'fairness cream' or going to a spa and the first thing I was asked was 'would you like the whitening cream?' I'm very fortunate to have the parents I have, otherwise I would have grown up with such a complex!

  5. Wow. I have never heard of this before. It's so strange to me. Here in the U.S all over the TV, you always see girls shelling out mad $$ to get nose jobs to make their noses smaller!! (and often getting carried away, by far)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Oh, and the fairness cream, Prettyinthedeset's is talking about-I only recently heard of that too! Again, un the US you always see women struggling to tan darker & darker. I don't get it. Is there supposed to be some "perfect" in-between??

  7. My god, I feel so sad for any young (or old) woman that buys into this crap, because they are insecure and believe that they need to look a certain way. I'm caucasian, and I dont have a perfect 'cleopatra nose' (WTF??), but I certainly wont be using one of these! I agree with your last paragraph 100% lady!

  8. I don't know what the big idea is, I mean, personally, I like Asian noses! I'm South Asian and have a sharp nose, and am only happy with it because it suites my oval face! Asian girls are so cute, with little eyes and pretty hair and small noses, in fact I know of girls who'd love to look like the Asian girls! Caucasian girls are great, but Asian girls are pretty and have cute faces, I don't see a problem with that! In fact, Asian girls should be proud for having such cute faces! When will ladies of the world learn to love themselves for who they are? WHEN? :(

  9. Interesting article :) I have a little button baby nose. It's small, and it fits my face well, so I can't imagine wanting to reshape it. I remember when I was little my mother would tell me to pinch my nose in the morning so it would grow in a little narrower. I don't have a problem with nose clips, or face masks (to make your face narrower), hair dye, colored contacts, circle lenses, teeth whiteners, etc. etc. But I do agree with you, one must love him/herself and accept their flaws.

  10. @London's Beauty: No, I'm not reviewing these, LOL. Too painful! I was just writing about them because I thought sosme people who might never have heard about such devices would find them interesting.

@prettyinthedesert: I definitely remember the "Fair & Lovely" ads, although they weren't shown where I was. I remember a lot of complaints about how racist the ads were.

@Persephone: I don't think there's an in-between shade, it's just whether your cultural standards of beauty think fair or dark skin is more beautiful. I've noticed that in Western countries, people tend to want to tan and appear darker, but in Asian countries, people tend to want to be as fair as possible. Of course this is a bit of a generalization, but general trends to seem to swing that way.

  12. Lovely post, you are right!! I'm Italian and when I went to Thailand last year I was surprised to learn that there "fairer is better", whereas here (almost) everyone tries to be/look tanned even in winter. BTW I love Asian girls features, I think they are quite delicate.

  13. Ive seen this on ebay, haha. Great blog post btw.:)

  14. Wow I've never seen anything like this...I think we always want what we don't have, whether your asian, caucasian, etc.

  15. That package is so ironic, because according to the profile of her that was put on Egyptian coins at the time, Cleopatra had such a crazy nose.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hmm I'm not sure if I would really equate wanting your eyes to look bigger and having a higher bridge nose to wanting to look more Caucasian. I think there is a europeanization of beauty standards around the world, but in suggesting that Asians wanting qualities that Caucasians have would be like suggesting Caucasian people who tan want to be middle Eastern, or people who work out their ass on the Stairmaster to get a bubble butt all want to be latino or African.

But yes, I do agree that there people are going to extreme lengths to change their outward appearances, which is unfortunate that there is so much pressure for women (and men too!) to be beautiful and look a certain way--the most extreme case imo, is of course plastic surgery.

Thanks for the post! Hehe I've never seen these nose clips before. If I was so dissatisfied with the shape of my nose I think I'd just go plastic--but that's just me :P haha

  17. awesome post!

i am also asian and i have to admit that there are some days were i wish to get a bridge on my nose - even just a little. however, at the end of the day, i know that there are some girl out there wishing that her nose be smaller. we can never be perfectly happy with how we look like and guess what, i bet kate moss has something in herself that she didn't really love.

where i am going at here is that we all need to learn to love ourselves. because we are really beautiful as we are. :)

  18. Wow. I read all the way through this, truly fascinated. Thanks for such an informative post!

  19. This was hilarious for me to read. While I was growing up, my mother would pinch the bridge of my nose to help "form" it better. Then, when I turned 11, my grandmosther (paternal and Korean) suggested that I get the double eyelid surgery to help me widen my eyes for an overall "prettier" appearance.

P.S. I'm Asian, half Korean and half Chinese, so I definitely understand the weird pressure Asians put on each other to look a certain way.
The Asian standards of beauty are ridiculous. I'm more than content with how I look and would never consider using this weird little nose-pinching clip of doom. Looks painful and unnecessary.

  23. It goes around in circles. White girls use fake tan to have darker skin, Asian girls use clothes pins to make their noses narrower and Black girls straighten their naturally curly hair.

I like reading blogs from all over the world so I can see different products. Just because your eyes are different to mine it doesn't mean I don't want to see how the eyeshadow looks on you or eyeliner. Everyone is different anyway, what looks good on me won't look good on the next White person and vice versa. I like your blog and I like the way you look in your pictures x

  26. OMG.

Surely no one would believe that you can reshape bone and cartilage with (essentially) a peg??

I knew of an asian family who kept their twin 10yr old daughters indoors for months before their overseas family arrived to keep them from getting tanned. It really is a bit scary.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Mei: I think it just works by literally squeezing your nose into shape. The manufacturers are betting that over time, all that squeezing will indeed slowly reshape your nose.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh my got, this looks so painful. HORRIBLE. When I was little my neighbors and I would joke that we had to pinch our noses every day to get them more sharp (if you know what I mean). Yeah it's too much work. I'm just gonna live with my flat, bridge-less, Southeast Asian nose :P

This also reminds me of the Chinese surgical process of making girls taller ._.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I never see this before, but I'm not so surprised, as one is always unhappy with one's face! When I went for a trip in Indonesia, all wester, tourists where going to be as much as possible under the sun and get tan, while on locals ad it was all about "whitening cream", and I had a hard time finding a non-withening one!

Personnaly I have Caucasian type, and I'd rather like to have a smaller nose than that big one in the middle of my face!

  30. The grass is always greener on the other side, unfortunately. I think as long as you are comparing yourself to someone else you're not going to like what you see in the mirror. 32. In the Philippines, I saw this on Broadway Gems..

Anyway, I dont think this is very effective.. When I was young, my mom would pinch my nose everyday to make it pointed. Coz back then, my nose was a cute rounded one.. But now I'm grown up, I have a pointed nose, probably because my dad has pointed nose too or the pinching was effective. I think its only effective if you're young since the cartilage in the nose bridge area is still malleable.

  34. Wow, that is kind of crazy. I'm caucasian and always sat in the sun burning my skin until it peeled to get 'tan' and now of course I have some sun damage onto of my pale skin. I also think that in the US a lot more focus is on the body--or maybe i just think that because i'm plus size and think of beauty as including the whole body, not just shoulders up. Interesting article, i'm glad I found your blog (from MUA), thanks!

  36. I'm a black male. Long story short, I developed scar tissue in one of my nostrils. That made the tip of my nose wider on the opposite side (compensating for not being able to breathe very well through the scarred nostril). Using the clip every once in a while made it look symmetrical again. Not a really common issue, but hey, it was worth the $8 to me.

(Note: I agree using it for the advertised purpose is insane.)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi thank you for posting this. I am actually guilty of using a nose clip... However I do agree with what your saying, each of us just need to accept ourselves for who we are. Flat noses, big eyes, small boobs, nappy hair... Whatever society might label as 'ugly' or 'not preferred.' I am Polynesian, and I have flatter nose compared to my family members. It's always made me self conscience... I thought I'd give the nose clip a try cause it was inexpensive and not as dramatic as a nose job. it does work but I know it won't be permanent... Anyways thanks for writing this, it has given me immense confidence to love and accept my nose the way it is.

Basically i am not happy with my nose i think Asians are prettier and Caucasians too and the Middle East too
So yeah like you 've said that we all have something in ourselves that we dont like

I love her nose and eyes, if I wanted someone with a pointy nose I could of just married another Brit, but Caucasians don't interest me, believe me the features that Asian women have are incredibly beautiful the large population of Caucasians living in Asia will tell you that.

Caucasian women do come with soft, silky skin. They have beautiful, creamy skin so envied by women all over the world for thousands of years. They have eyes that come in all shades from blue to green to brown to purple!. Caucasian women have eyes like diamonds. They have hair colors that come in many shades from golden silky hair to fiery luscious hair to chestnut color hair to black. They have wife feminine hips, long shapely legs, perky womanly breasts. Their noses looks like it was slowly crafted with care and patients. Their lips come in all shapes from feminine bow shaped to Angelina Jolie thick lips. They can have high cheekbones and in between.....pretty much Caucasian women are stunning and beautiful and....understandable why Asian women envy them.

What is sad is that when we do these things in private to help with our low self esteem, then we go out in public and pretend that the competitor we are seeing who we are afraid is prettier than us we treat them meanly. when we know deep inside we are jealous and then go home and put our nose pin on. 58. I think this idea (of nose clipping) is crazy. Yes, women are obsessed with beauty but shouldn't we be celebrating the diversity to it as well. As an Indian male, I'm strongly attracted towards Asian noses as much as I am to Caucasian noses. Asian noses are usually small/ flat but make no mistake, THEY ARE SEXY. No doubt, Asian girls are so much drawn towards big nosed Caucasian men but I guess this is what nature is all about. What Asian girls also seem to want are bigger boobs similar to what their Caucasian counterparts usually possess. I fully agree with this view. To me, nothing is sexier than the look of a flat nosed girl sporting big breasts.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thanks for this post. It really gives me some solitude to know I'm not the only asian girl experiencing this pressure. My nose is actually pretty fitting for my face and not at all wide, but I think amidst all the conditioning of my asian friends who fed into these things, as well as my mom who keeps encouraging me to get double eyelid surgery even when I keep telling her I'm okay with my eyes, I've sometimes faltered into being more self-conscious and not-okay with my appearance than I usually am. I've actually purchased this clip before when I felt a little down about myself, but after a few tries, i realized I was being ridiculous and that I didn't really care how my nose looked. It was more about how I thought everyone around me perceived me as, and once I realized it, I also realized I didn't really care that much.

  61. Just to note. Flat broad noses aren't exclusive to asians and "caucasian noses" are not exclusive to caucasians. Asian beauty obsesses over much more than just eyes and noses. They obsess over all the things we do and more. They basically just take beauty to a whole different extreme than we do. From my experience, they are not trying to emulate American beauty. The deal is that some Asians are born with that "perfect" nose they try to achieve and some are not, just as caucasians are also born with flat wide noses. It's not a white thing. Just wanted to clear that up.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hi there! I noticed this device selling here (in Singapore) a few years back which seemed to be quite popular but has somehow died down now.

Love your article on how we should love ourselves, but I disagree with the view that Asians who wish to have bigger eyes or sharper noses are all trying to look Caucasians. For one, Caucasians have deep set eyes which can make one look older. The Asians who want bigger eyes want just that - bigger eyes, and not bigger + deep-set eyes (who doesn't want big eyes). Also, Asians who want sharper nose just want a higher bridge. Miiddle easterns also have a higher bridge noses, and not only caucasians. Put a large caucasian nose on an Asian face and it will look way out of proportion.

I noticed that most people who accused Asians of wanting to look white are mostly whites themselves. Have you heard of Asians who accuse Caucasians who wants to slim down wanting to look Asian because Asians are genetically smaller?

I blame the stereotyping on early Hollywood / Caucasian media success. I see less of such accusations now with the rise of K-pop / J-pop popularity.

  63. I have a very flat nose bridge but I love my nose. Small noses are considered the most beautiful. I would trade my small flat nose for anything

  64. We are all made differently in every way no matter what race it may be...I read the blogs and some bloggers still still making hate comments against the other race..this is just crazy to me. I SEE BEAUTY IN ALL RACES FOR THIS IS WHAT MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND...THE BEAUTY IN ALL DIFFERENT RACES, it wld be so boring if we all looked alike and or had the same features.
