Etude House Play 101 Pencils FOTD: Makeup Look with the Pencils on Eyes, Cheeks, Lips

In my Etude House Play 101 Pencils review, I shared swatches of the these nifty little multi-tasking pencils on my arms and lips, but wasn't able to fully swatch them on other places, like eyes and cheeks. And also on my Instagram page, I've received some questions about how the pencils blended out on drier skin patches like cheeks. So, I decided the only way to resolve this question was to actually do an FOTD (Face of the Day) with the Etude House Play 101 Pencils!

For this look, I used almost every shade of pencil in my arsenal - 15, 26, 28, and 50 (swatches re-posted below . The only one I didn't use was 20, because it was hot pink, and I wasn't sure how to incorporate it yet. But I'm sure that will come another day!

For the eyes, I used 28 (shimmery pink) on the inner half of the lid, 26 (coral with gold shimmer) on the outer part of the lid, and 50 as eyeliner. 26 and 28 are glitter finishes, while 50 is creamy, but texture of all 3 pencils was quite similar to eyeliner, in that they dry and set quite quickly, so if you're trying to blend them, you have to work fast. I found it beset to apply a little bit of colour and blend outward for a more gradient look. The good thing is, once they set, then, just like eyeliner, they don't budge.

28 is a very pretty neutral pink, and it's a great neutral lid colour on anyone. 26 is a coral with shimmer, and it's certainly, for me at least, a more daring choice on the eye. I wouldn't normally wear this short of bright shade out, but I think it looked pretty cool on! If this isn't your type of colour, don't worry, there are more eye-friendly shades to choose from in the full range.

Below, is the same eye look, but with my eye closed. You can see a little bit of a smudging boo-boo on a small patch of my lid near the lashline. If you're more careful and less clumsy than I was, it shouldn't be a problem.

For the lips and cheeks, I used the only glossy-finish pencil, 15. I thought it was easiest, since the glossy pencil had a slicker texture and was just easier to blend on cheeks, and more comfortable-feeling on the lips. If you have more makeup skills than me, you can certainly use the other non-glossy finish pencils on your lips/cheeks, as I showed in my Etude House Play 101 Pencils review post, but I wanted a more subtle, blended look this time round. 15 is a warm peachy shade, so I'm sure that it will be quite popular among girls looking for a warm nude lip. I typically pick a rosier colour for my lips, but this was a nice change.

Edited to add: I received some comments on this look (on my blog/Instagram/FB etc.), and how it doesn't look very flattering on me. I'm not offended by such comments (I know they're not trolling, just expressing their own views), but I thought I'd explain why this look is up. I know this isn't the best look, and it's not due to bad colour application or poor product quality. It's due to the fact that the shades I was sent for review were mostly warm shades that didn't really suit my complexion (if you look at my previous FOTDs, you probably realize I tend to wear cooler shades more than warm shades). So it does look a little "off", and I know I don't look my best in such shades, but I've put the photo up anyway, because part of being a beauty blogger is showing how it looks on me - not so much so I can look pretty online, but more so that anyone who wants to know what the texture/finish of the product looks like when used on the face can see it for themselves from this photo. So while these may not be the best shades for me, I hope someone else who is more suited to those shades will find the look useful for seeing how the pencils might apply on their own skin. If nothing else, just take this as an object lesson in what happens when you wear colours that are wrong for you, and then read my Undertones for Asians post for an explanation of how you can figure out what shades look best on you! (I've been told my post was also useful for non-Asian people, too!)

I wore this look for about half a day, and it wore very well. The lip was the first to go, as you might expect, but the eyes stayed on pretty much as they were until it was time to take them off. So colour me impressed with these little pencils! And that's my look for the day. It's certainly a departure from my normal looks, but it's a nice change!

  2. no offense but your makeup looks horrible. identical shades for eyes, cheeks and lips, really? especially the eyes, they look swollen in the pink shade. im not sure if it were your lack of skill or the product *shakes head*

  3. @SherineStacey: Thanks for your comment! The goal of this post was to show my readers how the products looked on various parts of my face, e.g. eyes, cheeks, and lips, since this is a multi-use pencil and I received a few questions on how do they look like on cheeks and so on. The colours probably don't look that great on me because these are primarily warm toned shades, while I tend to look better in cooler-toned shades (if you've read my blogpost on Asian undertones, you'll probably be familiar with how I evaluate my own undertones). And I agree, pink and coral are fairly difficult shades to use on the eye, so it can look a little puffy. Since I only had a limited selection of colours to use, I just worked with what I had, so that my readers can see how it looks on the various parts of my face, and evaluate for themselves what it would look like on me. So while the look may not make me look pretty, I hope that my post achieved its goal of helping my readers see what the product looks like on various parts of the face, and in seeing what the colour looks like, so that it can help their purchasing decisions.

    Hope this answers your question!

  4. Hi can I ask if you used your fingers or a eyeshadow brush to blend the colours on the eyelid? Since you mentioned that the colours set and dry quite quickly upon drawing them. Thanks!

    1. @Cherie O: I used my fingers to blend out the colours, it seemed easier that way. Basically I "coloured" my eyes, and then blended out the colours before they set. They don't dry down THAT fast, so you have a couple of minutes to blend (which is sufficient), but the idea is not to sit around and wait before blending. If it helps, you can also apply your pencils over an emollient base (say, a creamy concealer used all over the eyelid), but of course this might affect the staying power. Hope this helps!
